Press release – 5th Pancretan Conference Alzheimer Disease & Related Disorders




Successfully completed the works of the 5th Pancretan Interdisciplinary Congress on Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders and the 1st National Conference on Active and Healthy Ageing, organized by the Alzheimer’s Society for Heraklion “ALLILENGII” (SOLIDARITY) within the celebration of the World Day of Alzheimer Disease and the International Day of Older Persons. Scientific Meetings took place in Heraklion, the Galaxy Hotel, from 22 until September 25, with international participation.

The Conference held under the auspices of the Region of Crete and 7 Health Region, Municipality of Heraklion, the Medical Association of Heraklion, Heraklion Medical Society, the Medical School of the University of Crete, the Greek Geriatric and Gerontology Society and the Greek Association of Alzheimer Disease. Also in collaboration with the Alzheimer Disease Societies Chania, Rethymnon and Lassithi and the contribution of the Laboratory of Quality of Life of the Social Work Department of TEI of Crete.

Distinguished speakers presented their work on the newest in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, supporting patients and carers, preventing physical and mental vulnerability in the Third Age and the promotion of Good Health. Also researchers from the University area and FORTH presented research performed within the scope of the aging of the organizations and their efforts to understand these mechanisms. Finally, references were made to modern treatments that are still being tested, but promising.

A large number of health professionals involved in the care of patients with dementia and their families attended the conference, such as doctors, psychologists, social workers, nurses, dieticians, speech therapists and physiotherapists as well as others such as biologists, students and public Heraklion.

On the last day of the Conference were presented results of the Programs “THALES” and “THOUGHT” completed in the county and the city of Heraklion in the last two years by the University. Based on the first data evaluated the potential impact multitude of factors on the mental functions of the elderly, such as nutrition, the presence of other diseases, sleep problems and emotional disorders.

Finally, during the Conference, highlighted the importance of a holistic and interdisciplinary care of elderly patient and the patient with dementia and highlighted the strength and value of volunteering, especially nowadays. Also highlighted the need interconnection of health and state towards healthy aging.

On the last day greeted the conference the Minister of Health. Andreas Xanthos who stressed the importance of such scientific events to raise public awareness and dissemination of scientific knowledge and co-operation and guaranteed the intention of the Government to support efforts related to the promotion of health vulnerable groups.

Alongside the conference held exhibition of contemporary art related topics with artistic creations of Mrs. Stella Koukoulakis. The works of the artist are directly related to the brain functions of humans and presented through modern electronics era
